In the golden age of documentaries, never has it been so hard to find a good one to watch.
From voyeur’s true crime to glib travel shows, from copy and paste sports series to self-serving celebrity portraits, today’s mass media platforms flood our feeds with formulaic, rushed and one-dimensional formats that have come to define the genre in the public conscience. Films that quash the agency of the people and stories they show. Flawed attempts at objectivity that flatten reality into a single perspective, a single script, reproducing political and artistic paradigms of dominance and oppression.
Documentary cinema is about so much more. It can tear down a dictatorship, reveal family secrets, breath life into archives, question our norms and identities, confront us with the past… It is an art form in itself, constantly expanding and experimenting. Yet films like these are underfunded, poorly distributed and hard to access.
